In 1493, Christopher Columbus was so smitten with this volcanic island that he named it after himself. Since its discovery, St. Christopher, later shortened by British sailors to St. Kitts, has been fought over by the Spanish, British and French. Frigate Bay, a popular sunbathing and swimming spot, was the scene of brutal naval and land battles. Pirates, including the notorious William Kidd, enjoyed lucrative careers in Basseterre Harbour.
In 1983, the 65-square-mile St. Kitts and its sister island, Nevis, became an independent two-island nation, with a parliamentary government headed by a Prime Minister. Two decades later, holdovers remain -- like British accents, cricket and driving on the left side of the road.
The island's lush topography lends itself to eco-tourism, starting with the dormant volcano, Mount Liamuiga, covered by dense tropical rainforest. Colorful birds and butterflies, as well as the green Vervet monkey, reside here.
Sugar cane, the staple of the economy since the 17th century, remains St. Kitt's main export. While tourists have discovered St. Kitts, especially the white sand beaches of the southeastern peninsula, the island is still relatively unspoiled and uncrowded, with a relaxed, authentic atmosphere. |

To the best of AIR's knowledge the information and photographs on the listings are accurate but are not guaranteed. Rates, availability and conditions are subject to change without notice. RENTERS must check with AIR about specific items of importance to them.

RENTAL PROCEDURE:
Once a house is chosen, the rental price discussed, and the rental confirmed with the Owner or their agent, a lease or confirmation of the arrangements is immediately emailed to the Guest. Each Island and Owner has different procedures for payment so please ask when making your arrangements.
CANCELLATION POLICY:
This varies from Island to Island, and Owner to Owner, so please ask when confirming your arrangements.

Islands are surrounded by water. There are BUGS, and sometimes MOLD and MILDEW. Even the most luxurious villas are subject to nature's ways, and surprises can happen. THE OWNER, NOT ALL ISLAND RENTALS, is responsible for the cleanliness and maintenance of their home. Should problems occur please call the OWNER or their PROPERTY MANAGER. Unless specifically permitted or indicated, ABSOLUTELY NO ANIMALS are allowed in the villas. This includes animals belonging to visitors.
